before mica

These three pieces are works I did in high school. The painting I did in my senior year its about 4 feet by 3 feet and its portrait of my mom. The two mixed media pieces i did the summer before my senior year at the vermont studio center. They are oil painting collaged with different fabrics and papers and they are each about 4 ft by 2 ft.

Before coming to MICA i was not as focused on materials in my work. I did do alot of mixed media work in high school ,like in these pieces but i had never really realized or explored how many options i had when using material or the lengths to which i could take them. Throughout this year i have been immersing myself more and more into fiber art and experimentation with different materials. I find myself not only using fabrics and other mixed media materials for their visual and tactile effect but because of what they van represent to all different people. To me expressing myself in fabrics rather than in paint has much-more meaning.
