Over spring break I went to charleston with a few friends. One of my friends lives there so we stayed at her house but we also went camping for a little. We camped on Capers island a small island not far off the coast of charleston. The island was uninhabited and could only be reached by boat. It was a nature reserve and had a beautiful beach. We were the only people on the island at the time and we set up our tent right past the dunes on the beach. After being in Baltimore all year and especially during the winter, and living in commons being on capers island was extremely refreshing and inspiring. Since not many people really came to the island the beach was not cleared and had the most amazing shells and driftwood. At one point on the beach there were whole dead trees standing right by the ocean. One day we walked through from the beach through the forest to the other side of the island where there were marshes and I saw an alligator for the first time.
Being on the island and immersed in nature for the first time since i had started school really inspired me. Im really interested in the materials i use in all my art and i tend to use a lot of very different materials. The island had so many interesting rocks shells roots and trees and seeing all these things while being removed from my environment really helped inspire me to further explore how i use many different types of materials in my work.
