Hate pink Is a piece i made in collaboration with my friend grace Kubilius. We did not make it for any assignment , though grace ended up using it for an elements project. This piece hangs and the idea is for the viewer to go inside it / underneath it and be surrounded by everthing pink and be overwhelmed. We got the idea for this project when we were in village thrift. We were in the children's section looking for fabric for projects. We realized that the majority of young girls clothes are pink , frilly and flowery. Both of us had not really like the color pink when we were children and our parents never pushed the idea that pink was for girls. When we were young we would get annoyed when moat of the toys and clothes made for girls were pink , while boys got red and blue, we wanted reds and blue on our stuff. When we are young the idea that pink is for girls and blue is for boys is forced upon us and and en-grained into our minds. The idea of pink being forced upon us was the idea for the project, we collected all the pink clothing and cloth we could find and sewed them together with tulle and ribbons and other things considered to be for girls. We wanted to go overboard with pink so when the viewer would step inside the small space all the pink , fuzzy frilly cloth would touch them and they would be completely engulfed in pink and would have to confront their feelings and relationships with the color pink.
When we stood inside we were both overwhelmed and grossed out by the over the top stereotyped girlness of the pink.Other people actuallly enjoyed it and said it reminded them of their childhoods and building forts.
